About Historic Rural Hill

Historic Rural Hill is a sprawling 265-acre historic site, farm, and cultural center nestled in the picturesque landscape of Huntersville, North Carolina, that offers a captivating glimpse into the region’s past. Its rich history dates back to 1760, with the original settlement of Major John Davidson, a signer of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. For over two centuries, the Davidson family resided on this land, transforming it into a prosperous cotton plantation. Although the original mansion was lost to a fire in 1886, the site preserves the Davidson family’s legacy through the remaining structures and the family cemetery.

Today, Historic Rural Hill is a vibrant hub of activity, hosting a diverse array of cultural events and educational programs throughout the year. It is renowned for the Loch Norman Highland Games, a celebration of Scottish heritage featuring traditional games, music, and dance. Other popular annual events include the Amazing Maize Maze in the fall, the Rural Hill Sheepdog Trials, and various living history weekends that bring the past to life. Visitors can also explore the scenic nature trails, interact with the farm’s Highland cattle, and discover the historic one-room schoolhouses. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or seeking a unique family outing, Historic Rural Hill offers a memorable experience for all.
